From Day One, I teach and review with all my students the 5 Phonetic Skills.
The Five Phonetic Skills allow students to identify the five common patterns of English words and “prove” the vowel sound in a word. Proving words using the Five Phonetic Skills is a great tool used to decode, pronounce, spell new words, and help unlock the power of reading.
Memorizing and using these five skills is an indispensable tool and reading strategy used to decode, pronounce, and spell new words.
The Five Phonetic Skills are:

Phonetic Skill #1: When one guardian consonant — and nothing more — follows the vowel, the vowel will be short.

Phonetic Skill #2: When the vowel is followed by two guardian consonants and nothing more, the vowel will be short.

Phonetic Skill #3: When a vowel stands alone, it will be long.

Phonetic Skill #4: Silent E makes the first vowel long.

Phonetic Skill #5: When vowels are adjacent, the second vowel is silent, and the first vowel is long.
These are blends. A Blend is two or three consonants standing together, each letter keeping its own sound -Though Blends can appear at the beginning or end
Two Decoding Skills :
Decoding Skill 1
When a vowel is followed by just one consonant, that consonant must go forward and join with the next vowel. “One must run.”
Mark everything under the word. Look at the first vowel and determine how many consonants follow it. If there is only one, that consonant will move to the next syllable. The syllable break will be between the vowel and the consonant. Now apply the Five Phonetic Skills to decode each syllable separately. At this point, guardians are no longer marked.
Decoding Skill 2
When two consonants follow a vowel, they will split. Mark everything under the word. Look at the first vowel and determine how many consonants follow it. If there are two, they will split. The syllable break will be between those two consonants. Now apply the Five Phonetic Skills to decode each syllable separately.
